Why you need to stop looking externally for answers in your career...
One of the biggest red flags I hear on consults with potential new clients is when they are looking for me to tell them what to do with their career. That may give you pause considering I am, in fact, a career coach, but here’s the thing: as a coach, it is neither my job nor my goal to tell my clients what to do. My focus is on helping clients decide the right answers for themselves. As soon as I meet someone who wants me to be their “fairy godmother” and solve their problems, I typically run the other way.
Not only is it super difficult for me to solve the problems of others on their behalf, but I also think it’s pretty counterintuitive. In my experience, I’ve found that the reason why most of my clients are feeling stuck, overwhelmed, and confused about the direction of their career in the first place is because they’ve been looking externally for answers. They’ve been basing their career decisions off of what they think they “should” be doing and the expectations of others, instead of on their own internal compass. This is why they’re feeling unfulfilled and frustrated. And as a result, I can pretty much guarantee that we won’t solve a problem that was formed by looking externally for answers by looking externally for other answers.
When you’re out of alignment in your career and lacking fulfillment, the best thing you can do is turn inwards. Internal reflection is the most lasting path to clarity and fulfillment, even if it’s not as quick or convenient as taking a test online or asking someone else to tell you what to do… And even though it’s kind of a pain in the butt sometimes, don’t we all owe that to ourselves?
I believe that we all deserve the kind of clarity that can only come with turning inwards, and that, my friends, is why I will never agree to be your fairy godmother. :)
So… if you’ve made it this far and you’re ready to do the real work to get lasting answers in your career… yay! I’m so excited for you. If you need help getting started on the road to career clarity, shoot me a note. I’m happy to support you through this work so that you can finally get some (real) answers.
